Was Obama Right?
Dear
Lovers of the Unity of the Faith (of God),
On Saturday Illinois Senator and 2008 Democrat Presidential hopeful
Barack Obama delivered a speech on faith and politics at the United
Church of Christ General Synod in Hartford, Connecticut. "Somehow,
somewhere along the way, faith stopped being used to bring us together
and started being used to drive us apart. It got hijacked. Part of it's
because of the so-called leaders of the Christian Right, who've been
eager to exploit what divides us...My faith teaches me that I can sit in
church and pray all I want, but I won't be fulfilling God's will unless
I go out and do the Lord's work."
Well, Senator, you got it partially correct. You stated the obvious
about the Religious Right. Now we know you were trying to make political
hay before your own religious denomination. But it is true. The doctrine
of fundamentalist Christianity by its very nature seeks to divide and
conquer. Forget about the specific political issues you mentioned
("gay marriage and abortion"), how about the most critical
issue of them all, whether or not certain individuals or groups are more
righteous in the sight of God or not? They are taught and believe that
some are headed toward eternal peace with God and some for eternal
torment and punishment. Talk about divisive!
But, Senator, we have good news for you and everyone else. There is no
division in the Christ you say you believe in. The Bible says there is
neither Jew nor Greek, male nor female, bond nor free. In other words,
we are ALL one in Him.
Regarding Senator Obama's claim that faith teaches that he won't be
fulfilling God's will unless "I go out and do the Lord's
work", he could not be more wrong. The Bible proclaims clearly that
"Christ Jesus is the will of God". And that He, only He, did
the Lord's work. That makes sense, right? If Jesus is the only Lord (and
He is) then it just goes to reason that only He could accomplish the
work of the Lord. When He punched in to the "time clock" of
His time on this Earth, and completed His task successfully, we ALL got
credit for His hours. No overtime is needed. When He got promoted and
ascended to Heaven, we ALL went with Him and now according to the Bible
are "seated with Him in heavenly places."
So, know this Senator Obama, if you get promoted to become the President
of the United States or not, this will not be the will of God being
accomplished in your life. Because the will of God, Jesus the Messiah,
has cast His vote for you and ALL other humans (including those of the
Christian Right) as righteous and holy. By the way, at the end of the
day, His vote is the only one that counts.
